Kam Ghaffarian, co-founder and chairman of Axiom Space Inc., speaks during an interview at the company's headquarters in Houston, Texas, U.S., on Friday, Jan. 14, 2022. IBX's Kam Ghaffarian wants to go even further: the stars. Ghaffarian has been instrumental in ushering in the new space economy, having co-founded and invested in a cadre of commercial space ventures. Unlike other high-profile billionaires building commercial space companies, Ghaffarian made his fortune through the space industry, and rather than focusing on access to space, he's leveraging those falling costs to build out infrastructure and business activities in space. Ghaffarian believes the space economy will be worth trillions of dollars — and sooner than many realize.

In the shadow of the Rocky Mountains, with an elevation one mile closer to space than sea level, lies an area that's home to a burgeoning cluster of aerospace businesses. Voyager Space CEO Dylan Taylor traveled to space on a Blue Origin flight in 2021. For Voyager, that's been true. For Taylor, who has been to space himself after a trip on Blue Origin's New Shepard, the Denver-Boulder space story extends beyond Voyager too. Denver area startup Orbit Fab is building refueling ports for satellites that will allow them to fuel up in space.

That's what Spire Global is betting on in its recently announced partnership with AI darling Nvidia . Twelve-year old Spire Global is in the radio frequency sensing business, operating a satellite constellation that collects space-based radio frequency data that can be analyzed and sold as a service. Nonetheless, "at this point in time there is no immediate economic flow from Nvidia to Spire or vice versa," he noted. Spire Global, a small capitalization stock that went public through a SPAC merger in 2021, shot up roughly 40% in response. Spire Global forecasts achieving positive free cash flow this summer, or by the third quarter of 2024.

Satellite manufacturer Terran Orbital is "looking at everything" regarding the company's future, CEO Marc Bell told CNBC, as it considers Lockheed Martin' s acquisition offer. "We found out about [Lockheed's takeover bid] when the rest of the world found out about it," Bell said on CNBC's "Manifest Space" podcast. The defense giant is already a significant stakeholder in Terran Orbital, with a 28.3% stake at the time of the proposal. Terran Orbital declined to comment on a shareholder lawsuit filed Wednesday in response to the company's board adopting a "poison pill" stock rights plan after Lockheed's offer. Bell added that Terran Orbital is "thrilled with the validation" that Lockheed's offer gave it.

Hawaiian Airlines is rolling out complimentary Wi-Fi via SpaceX's Starlink on board commercial flights this week, the companies told CNBC, the first major U.S. airline to offer the satellite-based service. Hawaiian's plan for complimentary Wi-Fi comes as airlines ramp up their offerings for high-speed connectivity. "It really feels like an experience that should not be possible when you get on a commercial airline flight. Hawaiian signed an agreement with SpaceX in April 2022, looking to utilize the Starlink network – which consists of more than 5,000 satellites in low Earth orbit and boasts more than 2.3 million customers worldwide. CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. But, when Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman both reported 2023 results this week, it was a different story. For both companies, space was the top segment for sales growth in 2023 — by a wide margin. You'd think with such strong results, space would be a highlight of quarterly earnings calls. But for both Lockheed and Northrop, executives and analysts still only mentioned space in passing.

American companies like Google , Microsoft , and OpenAI are currently driving the cutting edge of generative artificial intelligence development across the globe. However two of U.S.'s top national security leaders said that AI lead is under attack from foreign cybercriminals and nation-states like China. "Eighteen of the 20 most successful AI companies in the world are American," FBI Director Christopher Wray told CNBC's Morgan Brennan during a CNBC CEO Council virtual roundtable on Tuesday. "Generative AI, in the world of cyberattacks, is what I would describe as taking kind of junior varsity athletes and making them varsity," Wray said. But while much of the discussion around AI in the cybersecurity space has centered on how AI is enhancing both attackers and defenders, Wray said the FBI is also focused on "defending American AI [research and development], American innovation in AI."
